"Avatar: Fire and Ash" is off to a great start at the box office with a $345 million opening weekend, but is unlikely to match the $2 billion of "Way of Water."
FRIDAY PM UPDATE: With a great 72% definite recommend on Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak from last night’s audience, 20th Century Studios’ James Cameron threequel Avatar: Fire and Ash is seeing $37 million today, including last night’s $12M.
Fire and Ash was the highest-grossing film at the box office this weekend with $88 million worth of movie tickets sold in the US and Canada.
The graph shows that this week Avatar: Fire and Ash hit its highest popularity of the year while Avengers: Doomsday peaked at a meager 10 last week. Since then its popularity has dropped to a level of just six despite a new trailer dropping every week over the next month.
Avatar returned to theaters with Fire and Ash on December 19. James Cameron crafted this third chapter for the big screens, with a 3D experience in mind. That message has been crystal clear from the very beginning, from both Cameron and the distributors, 20th Century Studios, which Disney owns.
The second installment in the film series, "The Way of Water," had a better start and tallied $5 million more in its Thursday preview haul in 2022. Still, box office analysts expect "Fire and Ash" will bring in at least $100 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada.
