Strong winds and drenching rain have descended on New York City, raising the risk of power outages and coastal flooding as the biggest U.S. city prepares for the holiday weekend.

Heavy rain and powerful wind gusts have led to damage across the Tri-State area on Friday, including on Long Island, where high winds knocked down a tree and sparked a chain reaction.

As of 1 p.m., 2.7 inches of snow had fallen at Belvedere Castle in Central Park, the official National Weather Service measuring station for the city. That made Sunday the earliest date of the season since 2018 that more than two inches of snow had accumulated in Central Park.
